An article by Charles Murphy, "Image ProcessingTechnology: A New Look at Old Things"

Image processing technology is finding applications in new fields each day.
Increasingly, students need to be prepared for careers that use this powerful tool.
CIPE's Advanced Technological Education
project is promoting and advancing image processing in the school-to-work
setting, especially for students in 10th grade through community college.
Professional development workshops are being scheduled now to instruct
educators in the use of this rapidly growing and exciting technology.

Image processing technology gives us the power to manipulate and analyze
information in the form of images. Developed for space exploration and
biomedicine, digital image processing is now used in a wide range of business and
industrial applications. Images and the sophisticated software required to process
them are available for the computers typically found in schools and colleges.
Educators are using image processing to integrate science, mathematics and
technology in new and meaningful ways. Manipulating and analyzing images from
the real world motivates students and helps them develop critical thinking and
problem solving skills. Students appreciate the opportunity image processing
provides to explore, create, apply and retain what they have learned. Educators
find that image processing offers new ways to teach difficult concepts.

Introduced to education at the University of Arizona in 1990, Image Processing
has gained national recognition for its use in science, mathematics and
technological education. The Center for Image Processing in Education (CIPE)
provides staff development workshops and classroom materials to help you lead
your students into the world of digital image processing. Educators attending a
CIPE workshop receive a CD-ROM and sourcebook containing images and
activities appropriate for technological education courses and instruction on
effectively using image processing in the classroom.
Join more than 3,500 educators nationwide who are using image processing
as a tool for learning, exploration and discovery. E-mail or call (800/322-9884) CIPE today to set up a
workshop in your area or to request more information.
Supported by the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education program under Grants No. DUE-9454520 and DUE-9752101.
