The Center for Image Processing in Education (CIPE) is a nonprofit organization
formed in 1992. Its mission is to improve science, mathematics and technology
education through the development and dissemination of effective, innovative learning
tools. To that end, CIPE has presented professional development workshops on how to
use state-of-the-art image processing technology as a teaching tool to more than 3,500
teachers nationwide. CIPE's staff of 11 is drawn primarily from the ranks of
accomplished classroom teachers.
CIPE publishes a CD-ROM containing 75 lessons that teach image processing
technology as well as a wide range of science and mathematics concepts. In Spring
1996, CIPE released the HIP® Series of classroom products designed for specific
courses in science, mathematics and technology. In Fall 1997, CIPE launched new
instructional materials designed for technological education courses. The development
of CIPE's products has been generously funded by the National Science Foundation
and the Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Project.

Classroom Materials: CIPE develops classroom materials for technological education
courses at the high school and community college levels. In addition, CIPE publishes
the innovative HIP® (Hands-on Image Processing) Series of curriculum-based
classroom products for learning science and mathematics, developed by the University
of Arizona Image Processing for Teaching project.
Professional Development: CIPE offers intensive multi-day professional development
workshops throughout the United States. Workshops combine instruction in computer
technology and image processing techniques, featuring software created by the National
Institutes of Health. Each participant receives a CD-ROM and accompanying lessons
that use image processing technology to teach concepts in science, mathematics and
technology. As of November 1997, more than 3,500 educators have participated in
CIPE's hands-on workshops, and thousands of copies of image processing classroom
materials are in use nationwide. Workshops are developed and taught by educators
who have completed CIPE's rigorous certification program. In addition to teaching
image processing techniques and classroom implementation strategies, CIPE's
workshop instructors encourage participating educators to use all technology in
imaginative and cross-disciplinary ways.

All CIPE products and workshops are developed by leading educators with input from
research scientists. The role of teachers as product developers has resulted in
curriculum-based lessons that are concretely anchored in the real world of classroom
instruction.

Leading educators learn about CIPE products at national and regional conferences, trade
shows, and in journals, as well as by word of mouth from loyal supporters who have
used CIPE's materials. More than 30 master teachers have completed CIPE's
Instructor Certification program. Personal endorsement by these educators has resulted
in escalating demand for CIPE workshops and a mailing list of more than 12,000
teachers inquiring about the availability of CIPE products.
